Mariagrazia Pontorno conceived Roots during her art residency at the Harlem Studio Fellowshipin New York by observing some plant species in Central Park and mentally taking
apart the surrounding urban landscape.
Plants and skyscrapers—archetypical sites of the entire course of civilization—in the 3D
animation created by the artist have roots in the ground but a wind-like force uproots them
and makes them fly above the famous green rectangle in New York City. The video is accompaniedby eight prints inspired by the traditional herbaria (studied by Pontorno in the
Bronx Botanical Gardens library).
