“Illy is honored to work with Share Our Strength in order to further support the advancement of coffee-growing communities,” said Andrea Illy, Chairman of illycaffè. “Through Cup of Kindness, we have been able to improve the quality of life in Moyale Woreda and hope to expand our efforts throughout Ethiopia. We are proud to be entering our fourth year and look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.”

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and grows the highest quality washed Arabica beans in the world. Illy purchases these Ethiopian beans at a premium price and has devised a processing procedure that significantly increases crop quality with little investment. This system not only reduces water usage in this drought-prone land, but it results in an increase in coffee quality, translating into increased income for individual coffee growers. In addition to co-funding this project with the International Coffee Organization and the Common Fund for Commodities, illy sends its qualified technicians to work on-site to assist growers during the harvesting and processing stages as a further quality assurance. By increasing the value of the Ethiopian coffee farmer’s crop, illy ensures that farmers realize a profit for their efforts, upholding illy’s ethical and sustainable development practices throughout coffee-growing countries.

”Through our partnership with illy, we have continued to raise both awareness and funds, enabling us to provide much needed aid to children and their families living in incredibly adverse conditions,” said Billy Shore, Founder of Share Our Strength.

This holiday season illy’s Push Button House, designed by artist/architect Adam Kalkin, will be installed in the Time Warner Center from November 29 to December 29. The Push Button House is a fully functional and sustainable five-room home built within a standard industrial shipping container that opens fully in 90 seconds with the push of a button. Illy’s Cup of Kindness holiday tree will be “planted” in the area surrounding the illy Push Button House where visitors can make a donation and, as a token of appreciation, receive one of several gifts including an illy coffee cup designed by English architect and designer, Rufus Willis. The Rufus Willis cup is part of illy’s many signed and numbered limited edition cup collections, which are created by renowned and emerging contemporary artists and prized by collectors from around the world.
