Space and time, memory and places are the topics of Manuela Filiaci’s artistic oeuvre which resonates with her life: born in Vicenza, as a young woman she spent a few years in Nigeria, then moved to New York, where she studied and currently lives. In her brilliant essay, art historian Doris von Drathen explains the philosophical roots of this painter’s creative process. For Filiaci, making art becomes a way of marking our unstable positions in a larger universe whose being is ever-shifting and elusive. Well aware of their constructed and ephemeral quality, Filiaci’s images are so compelling that they offer themselves as moments of visionary and lasting insight. (Charta 2009).
