| For the first time, a book succeeds in documenting the entire artistic career of Gina Pane (Biarritz 1939 – Paris 1990), revealing a body of work extraordinary for its coherence and fascination, from Dessin verrouillé of 1968 to Prière des pauvres et le corps des Saints of 1989-90. Furthermore, this volume represents a discovery, a new way of “seeing her.” Not only was she among the first to conquer a space and a role for women in contemporary art, she was able to intuit and anticipate the changes in sensibility and culture. Undoubtedly among the most important protagonists of the last thirty years, Pane was known and appreciated world-wide for her actions in the Seventies, the performances in which she used a razor blade or a piece of glass to inflict small wounds on her body. The intensity of her artistic activity, however, is not adequately well-known. She was a generous, balanced artist who was attentive to every creative detail for both the actions and the installations. Gina Pane, who understood art as an instrument for the promotion of knowledge and communication among human beings, is an example for all young people willing to brave the world of art. | ||
