| Since the mid-’90s, Nalini Malani, one of the most important Indian artists, has become famous worldwide thanks to her fascinating experimental painted installations, which show a constant commitment to the socio-political situation of the subcontinent. Born in Karachi in 1946 before Pakistan separated from India, Malani and her family had to take refuge first in Calcutta and Pune, and later in Mumbai, where she’s been living and working since 1958. Malani has been creating many works there and has achieved a new position among artists: she’s become an icon of the new generations of Indian artists. The provocative works by Nalini Malani have been exhibited all over the world, in important solo and group exhibitions, among which are the Istanbul Biennial (2003) and the Venice Biennial (2005). Robert Storr’s chosen Malani to participate in the 52nd Venice Biennial. | ||
Artist biography: Nalini Malani was born in Karachi in 1946. A year after her birth the partition of India into two nations (India and Pakistan) forced her family to flee to Calcutta. Now she works and lives in Mumbai. |
