| “I’ve never been happy with the kinds of contortions I go through in the name of reinventing myself. I’ve changed course many times over the years within a domain of so-called studio art: I’ve been through land art, body art, installation, public art. I used to say that installations were difficult, not readily commercial— they’re expensive and you execute work that is thrown away afterwards. After you do that kind of work for a long time anybody who has wanted to support you has done so. You enter a kind of desert, and that’s the time when some people turn to public art, because it seems to be somewhat separated from the other world. It has features not necessarily represented in gallery or museum art. It’s not supported by galleries, and it’s also not supported by critics, because they feel that public art is decided on by juries that don’t know anything so why should they bother to review it. So public art has some forces against it. Within this atmospheric fusion of architecture and sculpture there are some new laws being written—I’m just not sure what they are.” —Dennis Oppenheim |
