| Francesco Clemente first traveled to India in 1973 in search of “somewhere else.” The acutely contemporary world of India that he encountered, whose antiquity had been transformed and reinvented by a lively popular culture, enchanted him. The artist would find himself at home there over the next four decades. During his visits, Clemente’s image-indulgent eye, always ready to “conquer the world as picture,” took innumerable routes through the ever-mutating cartography of Indian visual culture. In fact, it seems the images got used to him — they rotated around him, gravitated towards him, surrounded him by capillary attraction. Temple exteriors, shop signage, calendars, bidi wrappers, advertisements, graffiti... Clemente built up an archive of these Indian images — both in his memory and in his notebooks filled with hundreds of drawings, lying latent over decades, coalescing, talking to each other, eventually surfacing in his work in another incarnation, another context. |
